ADDRESSING DISPARITIES IN HEALTH LITERACY

It’s no secret: The healthcare system can be confusing. Even overwhelming at times.

Especially since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, too many Rhode Islanders – particularly those living and working in traditionally underserved communities – have experienced disruptions in the way they seek and receive the care they need at every level of the healthcare system.

LET'S GET BACK ON TRACK.

Our solution: Let’s come together as a community, and helps Rhode Island get back on track when it comes to their overall health & well-being. Working alongside the City of Providence, the Rhode Island Public Health Institute was proud to serve as the driving force behind the creation of the Providence Community Clinics Network – a unified, fully collaborative coalition of Rhode Island’s most trusted and influential community-based clinicians and public health leaders.

RESEARCH AND OUTREACH

Our first step: Leveraging grant funding from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, we conducted a comprehensive, community-based needs assessment to help paint an accurate, culturally reflective picture of Rhode Islanders’ understanding – or lack thereof – of the healthcare system at large. We spoke to more than 1,000 community members and held several focus groups that covered topics like COVID-19 vaccines, mental health, general health literacy, social determinants of health such as food insecurity and more.

PROVIDER RESOURCE LIBRARY

Our needs assessment discovered significant gaps in the way Rhode Island’s healthcare sector disseminates information to individuals and families. It found people want to get healthy; they want to access the care they need – but they don’t know where to start.
